Not as in depth as other Ghibli's but I thought it was worth the watch and the english script was really quite excellent. Worst thing was the story. Who could not see the aliens coming from a mile away, really quite poor. Ah also the script was terrible, just listen to anything from John Hurt. The first three were good B movies (okay two was rubbish) they were smart, they ribbed their source material. This film believed itself, it seemed to have very little self knowledge. The film is short of very good, because... Well that is hard to define. Was it because you got little insight into Capote? Or that he not a very likeable character? Certainly the establishing shots of where the murders happen is quite beautiful, but you quickly lose a sense of place. The film had little beyond the excellent acting to make it stand out. Not true, granted Mr Mac has had acting classes from K Revees, Cruze is not at most engaging, crap but it's not the worst film ever. Anticipation: 1. Actual: 2

Walking Tall: WWE produced movie and it shows. The weekly wrestling fest has more depth of story.Anticipation: 1. Actual: 2

Last King of Scotland: Excellent, gripping and the actors are all superb. Forest particulary good as he does not just play the I'm nice and then I'm a nutter, much more subtle than that. Anticipation: 4. Actual: 4

Atonement: a burberry advert no more no less. Ikea not annoying but really an oscar. No I don't think so. Anticipation: 4. Actual: 1

Unleashed: Jet Li in retirement mode, very hohum, one good fight in a toilet cubicle made me not regret watching it, just. Also seeing Morgan Freeman in a Spar was quite funny. Glasgow did seem to be a suburb of London, everyone had a cockney accent. Anticipation: 2. Actual: 2

Diving Bell and the Butterfly: This was a good movie, the guy's story is defintiely worth notice and the film does justice to his strength and gives some insight to the difficuties and fustrations that his condition must create. The movie does have a slight distance to it as it is filled with beautiful women all surrounding this man. Also there does seem to a general obsession with hair in women's eyes. Anticipation: 5. Actual: 4

Stardust: good solid fun. The main guy is a little wooden, but i am still a sucker for the danes smile. The story doesn't flag and the sub stories do not consume the larger story. Anticipation: 3. So what have I learnt from these movies. Well nothing, but have I enjoyed them you ask, well no not really, then why the hell watch them then. Well like many people I have a genre which I can watch even though they are crap, mine are action movies. Yes I have made it through Blue Jean Cop, Fist of the North Star and even Stone Cold. Anyway..
Doom: I quite liked it obviously it was shit but at least it had some balls about being a bit shit. The acting was dodgy and script terrible but it had some reasonable acting talent, although the Rock needs to get some more lessons. I so wish he had become the next Arnie, ah well. I found myself quite involved by the end, wish was destroyed by the first person action and the final ending.
Crank: Now forget about Jason Strats comedy walk, I think he thinks it makes him look efficent and mean, it doesn't. He can deliver the action with a good fight director although it is more MTV style that old school eastern filming, close short cuts from freaky angles. I enjoyed Crank it was crap but good crap andhad no intensions of anything else.
Shooting Aces: really quite crap, it thought it was somethingn so much more and it wasn't. Bad.
Transporter 2: I quite liked the first one, unfortunely this has upped the girls and the action. You know they have taken things a little too far when he drives a car up a ramp, pulls a bomb off with a suspended crane hook and then lands back on the wheels. Ah well watch Crank as a sequel instead.
So that concludes crap action films round up for now. Currently we are struggling though Bus 174, not an easy watch.

Sahara

How does this film suck?
Let me count the ways.

Matthew MacconWAHAY .. in the right film he's good (Contact). This is not the right film.

Penelope Cruzcontrol .. I have no idea if she's a good actress or not, none whatsoever. It's hard watching acting in a foreign language: all her words come out in the same mono-tonal drawl. When she opens her mouth all I hear is "Ack-ack. Ack ack ack-ack? ACK ACK!" I'm tempted not to give her the benefit of the doubt and state categorically that she's RRRRRRRRUBBISH! Also, does anyone actually think she's attractive? She looks like a Pepperami that's been stung in the mouth by a horse-fly! (Not that I am implying that all actresses should be nubile hotties of course. Far from it in fact: I am of the opinion that EVERY Hollywood film would be better served casting Kathy Bates in the lead female role. FACT! All studio films adhere to the insidious policy of body-nazism where boys can be old and flaccid but girls must be young, thin and willing. What kind of example is that setting to our young impressionables eh? It's wrong I tell you, WRONG!!)

Matthew Baconaway and Penelope Career-stop ... I've seen more chemistry in my naval that exists between these two-by-fours. When they finally kiss at the end it's like watching your uncle french-kiss a Red Setter. And not my uncle either .. your uncle.

It's the longest film ever made. * And you thought Heimat was a challenging watch; try viewing this all the way through without passing out/crushing your dvd player into bite-sized morsals with your hob-nailed boots.

(* Note: I have been informed that this film is in fact not the longest films ever made. SOUNDS GOOD!

Nice things then happen: Ziyi Zhang goes all dancey-dancey; there's some fights involving nice colours, boomer-daggers and Ziyi Zhang going all bendy-bendy. Then there are a few twists (which are dull) and then whole interesting plot thing fizzles into a stupid <dfn title="boring and pointless: BOINTLESS!">"romantic"</dfn> three-way which sounds a lot better than it actually is.

The dialog is particularly dull. Lots of teenage girl flowery aphorisms which do nothing to keep my foot kicking the dvd player in.

A lot of people will try to convince you that the film is beautiful and poetic. How many times have you seen a film that you start off enjoying, but then turns into run-of-the-middle rubbish? ALL. THE. TIME! I hate half-enjoying a film only for it to turn to goo in the last 15 minutes. If I wanted to feel like I've wasted the last 90 minutes of my life I'd watch Dragonfly.

Saw is grisly fun that keeps a you asking <dfn title="like: how did these people they get there? Can we trust them? Am I really enjoying this rubbish?">questions</dfn>, but when it gets to the point where <dfn title="Cary Elwes">that bloke off The Princess Bride who has been shit ever since</dfn> starts mugging and flexing his over-act gland, that nagging sensation hit my stomach that the whole thing was going to turn from Cheese to Shit ...

.. and it didn't! The ending of Saw turned the Cheese into Ham, but nice ham with mustard in nutty lightly-toasted bread. It's completely ridiculous, massively contrived, and doesn't even work as a puzzle movie because - unlike films like The Sixth Sense - the clues aren't there, HOWEVER it works because it's intriguing, silly and just plain entertaining. I enjoyed the twists and revelations, rather than being pissed off that they couldn't be deduced.

The Ring

Much maligned by <dfn title="Asian Horror Avocates">AHA</dfn>'s as not being a patch on the original.

Please note: All <dfn title="Asian Horror Avocates">AHA</dfn>'s can stuff their opinions down the nearest cabin-capped well! It's more creepy than Ringu and importantly has a special effects budget (Rick Baker: Legend!) and so depicts those who have been scared to death as an unnerving vision of explicit viceral horror, and not as pasty-faced extras holding their breath and gurning.

However, the ball is definately dropped in a couple of key ways:

Horses. Horses are never good in films, even stupid mad suicidal horses.
Horses in films are good for only two things:

<dfn title="I can't really escape that one">Being a form of transportation in Westerns.</dfn>

Being punched in the face, like in Blazing Saddles

Really: who's interested in watching horses? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's never been a good movie ever about horses.
(See Seabiscuit for details; that inspirational oscar-nominated true story poetically portraying the collective consciousness of post-Depression America SUCKED! Think I'm wrong? You're wrong, you horse-loving hoof-sucker!)

They show <dfn title="Samara">Sadako's</dfn> face! Part of the genius of Ringu is that you never properly see her face. Fear is mostly of the unknown: in the remake a massive part of the suspense gets sucked into the nearest 80's VCR as soon as you see <dfn title="Sadako">Samara's</dfn> face she stops being undead ghostly swallow-your-soul beastie-girl and turns into a cute-looking 12 year old girl with greasy hair. Girls can be scary, but not small girls with scalp issues.

.... I've talked myself out of it.
